Hampshire solicitors double fundraising target

Intrepid solicitors from a Southampton law firm have hit the treble as well as the double – by climbing three mountains, walking day and night, and raising double their target for charity in the process.

Members of the Trethowans’ corporate team decided to take on the Three Peaks Challenge, climbing three of the UK’s highest mountains, in aid of local charity The Joe Glover Trust. The ambitious adventure was part of the firm’s bid to complete 150 good deeds for the community in its 150th year.

Having originally set out to raise £2,500, the team completed the mission at the weekend and managed to double their fundraising target. Nursing their aching muscles and blisters they handed over a cheque for £5,000 to the charity this week, representing the total amount raised.

Mike Watson, partner and head of the corporate team, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have raised so much money for this very worthy local charity and would like to thank each and every person who sponsored us or supported the challenge. We have seen first-hand the outstanding work that the Joe Glover Trust does in Southampton and the surrounding areas and know the £5,000 will be put to very good use.”

Among the other local businesses to rally behind Trethowans’ Three Peaks Challenge were Lakesmere Group, Menzies, aap3, Wilkins Kennedy, Taylor Made and Taylorcocks.

Jane Wilmshurst from The Joe Glover Trust said: “We are absolutely delighted with the amount the team at Trethowans have raised for the charity. This will make an enormous difference and will enable us to help at least 10 families facing financial difficulties following their child’s diagnosis of cancer.”

The Joe Glover Trust exists to support families across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, Dorset, West Sussex, Wiltshire and the Channel Islands when their child is receiving treatment for cancer.

Many parents may need to give up work or take unpaid leave to care for their sick child but of course the mortgage/rent and household bills don’t go away. This has a huge impact on the family and affects their ability to cope with the devastating situation they are in and can lead families to get further into debt.

The grants the charity makes can be for a host of reasons such as rent or mortgage payments, everyday living costs, travel costs to hospital or sadly help towards funeral costs.

All the families the charity works with are receiving their treatment at the Regional Paediatric Oncology Centre at Southampton General Hospital, together with shared care at their local hospitals such as Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester.

Cancer creates a crisis in the life of each family member and the charity hopes to help families in whatever way it can, be it through its Grants Scheme, Day’s Out Programme, Televisions/Xboxes and iPads on the ward to help make life just a little more bearable for everyone.
