Richard Newton, Port of Tyne
Richard Newton has been appointed Commercial Director, Logistics, for the Port of Tyne, based in South Shields, North East England.
Formerly the Port’s Commercial Manager, the Northumbria University graduate has held international logistics roles in both operational and commercial positions in North East England and Northern Ireland, with Lidl and Montgomery Transport Group.
Richard said: “I am delighted to be building on 13 years’ experience at the Port of Tyne which has included securing new routes, increasing loaded container exports and developing the highest customer service standards for our customers whether they are blue chip global companies or local manufacturers.
“This is a great opportunity to help deliver our strategy for growth, bringing the outstanding customer service and exceptional value we provide across our multi-modal logistics services to new and expanding sectors.”

Joel Brown, Jackson Hogg Recruitment
Northumbria University Graduate Joel Brown has joined Jackson Hogg Recruitment, which provides recruitment and resource consultancy services for professional, through to senior and board level appointments for engineering and related sectors.
Joel, who lives in Newcastle and originally comes from Northallerton has worked in recruitment since he graduated last year, specialising in helping companies find electronic and electrical engineers.
Joel’s appointment means that Jackson Hogg Recruitment, which works exclusively with engineering, technology, energy and manufacturing related companies, now has one of the largest recruitment teams in the region serving these sectors.
Richard Hogg, Managing Director of Jackson Hogg Recruitment, said: “Expanding our team allows us to provide an even better service to our clients, it also means we’re now among the North East’s largest specialised recruitment teams for engineering, technology and manufacturing.
“There had been a trend for recruiters to be part of larger, jack of all trades type organisations but employers in industry now tend to prefer to deal with specialists.”

Martin Burrows, Encore Packaging Solutions
Encore Packaging Solutions has expanded its team following the appointment of experienced business development manager Martin Burrows.
Martin has worked within the print and packaging industry for more than 25 years, having originally studied and worked as a graphic designer before moving into sales and business development, meaning he is in a unique position when it comes to understanding clients’ requirements.
He will be using his design skills to help secure new customers, with plans to produce specially designed samples to demonstrate the variety of packaging Encore can manufacture. And with Encore’s experience in producing bespoke items, Martin will be targeting smaller, niche market producers looking for high quality one-off packaging options.
He said: “Encore Packaging Solutions is still a relatively new business but that means we are able to evolve quickly and adapt according to our clients’ requirements. We are very agile which means we are able to work with smaller producers and provide solutions for very niche market products.
“At the same time we are still able to cater for high volume orders and because we provide both corrugated and folding box products we can tailor a solution to most packaging requirements.”
Nick Bramwell and Lisa Hall, Bradley Hall
North East estate agent and chartered surveyor Bradley Hall is celebrating further company expansion with the appointment of two new team members.
Bradley Hall announced that Nick Bramwell, graduate surveyor and Lisa Hall, administrator will join the Grey Street operation as the chartered surveyor and estate agent continues to grow.
The new additions come in the same year the company opened its fifth office in Morpeth and launched financial arm BH Financial Services.
Nick, 22 and from Tynemouth, joins the team after graduating from Northumbria University with an Estate Management honours degree. His role includes working alongside senior surveyors and directors, assisting on commercial property matters across Newcastle and Northumberland.
Nick impressed the team during his yearlong placement with the company in 2014, and was welcomed back to become a full time member of the commercial property team.
Nick said: “I was delighted to be offered the role at Bradley Hall as I really enjoyed my placement year. There are so many opportunities to progress within the property industry, especially at this company, and I look forward to turning my passion and education into a successful career.”
Administrator Lisa Hall, 24, from Benton, followed her interest in the property industry to gain a role at Bradley Hall. Her role includes assisting on valuations, liaising with customers, working on the reception and the general running of the office.
Becky McCartney and Catherine Hopkins, Gospelware
Digital product specialists Gospelware have expanded their design team in the hiring of Becky McCartney and Catherine Hopkins.
The hires come as a further part of a planned recruitment drive that has seen the company grow by 50% since this time last year. As the company becomes known for its UI and UX expertise as well as their technical abilities, great focus has been put on expanding the design team to accommodate for larger projects simultaneously.
Becky joins Gospelware with over 6 years graphic design experience having also worked at digital educational games companies. As the education sector is a big focus for the company whose products centre around mobile app development, Becky brings a mix of important knowledge and skills to the team.
Becky said: “Since joining the Gospelware team, I feel privileged to be working with such a talented bunch of people. I am looking forward to progressing my skills even further, whilst working on a multitude of exciting projects.”
Catherine, who started as a design placement student, joins the team after impressing the company with her dedication to tasks set on live projects. In just finishing an FDA in Digital Design at Newcastle College where designing and building websites, as well as motion graphics and app design were a part of the course, Catherine is keen to learn from the team and shows great promise as a talented UI/UX designer.
Catherine said: “A lot of people study just graphic design and struggle to find work after college, the course I did was great for setting up my skills for design within the technology industry, and I’m so happy its lead to a job at Gospelware. It’s an exciting sector to be a part of.”
Andrew Carr, Scott Logic
Bespoke software development consultancy Scott Logic has welcomed a new client manager as it continues to grow its client base.
Father of two Andrew Carr joins the firm after hearing good things about the company culture from a former colleague who took a role at Scott Logic earlier this year.
Andrew, who’ll be based in Scott Logic’s London office, explained: “I was already familiar with the company as I sometimes attend the Bristech meetup group that Scott Logic sponsors and helped found. I heard such good things; the positive culture Scott Logic has really showed through and I wanted to be part of it.”
Andrew, who is originally from Enfield, North London and splits his time between the capital and Bath, graduated from Newcastle University with a degree in Computer Science in 1994, having begun coding as a hobby at around the age of 12. He has since built a career working with clients on trading applications, both in equities and bonds.
Having worked in Canada and the UK, in the public and private sectors, Andrew is particularly fond of Big Data analytics and also has experience of telecoms network management. He also has a keen interest in psychology, and hosts meetups in both London and Bath inspired by the well-known Myers Briggs personality types.
He said: “There is so much change in software development at the moment. It’s really hard for clients to keep up, and I wanted to join a company that I felt could make a real difference in terms of helping clients understand and navigate such a fast-moving environment.
“I’m really pleased to have joined a firm that aligns with my beliefs in terms of how things can be done.”
Adam Carter, Naylors
Naylors has appointed a new Graduate Building Surveyor to join its busy Building Consultancy team.
Adam Carter has been appointed to the role following his completion of an MSC in Building Surveying at Northumbria University last year.
Naylors’ five-strong Building Consultancy team specialises in building surveying and project management, operating across all sectors.
Adam said: “After graduating, I wanted to target established, expanding firms with good reputations in and around Newcastle. Naylors ticked all of these boxes and I was delighted to be given the opportunity to work at the firm.”
He continued: “It is my aim to become Chartered as soon as possible and I have already started to gain experience and learn from the leading professionals working in the Building Consultancy department at Naylors on a range of services including; building and due diligence surveys, dilapidations, maintenance surveys, contract administration, design and project management, schedules of condition and more.”
Naylors’ managing director, Angus White added: “We are very pleased to welcome Adam to our Building Consultancy team, we are committed to recruiting graduates and training them to high professional standards. Two of our surveyors have just become Chartered and we will also assist Adam in reaching this goal.”
Onyx Health
Healthcare Marketing Communications and PR Agency Onyx Health has announced three new hires in a boost to its offering to healthcare businesses in the North East, nationally and internationally.
Trevor Pill, formerly Marketing and Design Manager at leading nutrition brand Pharma Nord joins as Client Campaign Manager. Alex Gandhi who moves from London based Red Door Unlimited to the North East, takes up the role of Client Account Manager, while Ryan Gibson joins as a Graduate Designer.
Trevor has worked in the healthcare and nutrition industry for over seven years and has over a decade of experience in creating stimulating marketing campaigns for print and online. He will help clients reach out to their market using digital, design, print, display and direct marketing. He will offer a targeted, consistent and synergistic approach from start to finish on every project.
Alex has worked across a broad spectrum of clients with corporate communications and media relations needs for eight years, with a proven track record of delivering successful pharmaceutical promotional and non-promotional disease awareness campaigns. Alex will be responsible for Onyx Health’s pharmaceutical portfolio and will help to deliver strong campaign results for his clients.
Ryan, a recent graduate from the University of Sunderland with a BA (Hons) in Advertising and Design provides an added in-house design offering for Onyx Health, to help clients better utilise pictures and design as part of their communication efforts.
Onyx Health Director, Karen Winterhalter said: “With Trevor, Alex and Ryan on board, Onyx Health is better placed to reach out across the UK and offer specialist marketing communications services for consumer healthcare brands, as well as niche pharmaceutical, medical devices and diagnostics companies.”

Frank Suttie, Ward Hadaway
Frank Suttie has joined Ward Hadaway law firm as a Partner with an extensive track record of advising a wide range of clients at a high level on a diverse raft of matters.
In the education arena, Frank has widespread expertise in the schools sector, advising Academy Trusts and sponsors on regulatory and financing frameworks and corporate governance.
He is a consultant to the Department for Education, giving expert commercial overview on the Free School programme and advising in the development of a strategy for engaging with voluntary aided and foundation schools in Departmental sponsored capital investment programmes.

Rebecca Townend, LyteSpark
Newcastle-based LyteSpark, a provider of business video conferencing software, has appointed Rebecca Townend as the firm’s new marketing coordinator.
LyteSpark is a new video conferencing solution designed to help connect remote teams, clients, customers or suppliers. Users create video conferencing rooms to host their meeting attendees in their own branded environment.
With no downloads or software installation attendees can join instantly. It is an intuitive way of communicating which makes online communication as easy as talking to the person next to you.
New hire Rebecca has recently been awarded a first class degree in Business with Marketing from the University of Northumbria. Having gained experience with several firms based in the North East, Rebecca is a great example of the graduate talent available in Newcastle.
