Hydrochem boss Bill Abbott welcomes Brexit

BILL Abbott, Managing Director at water treatment specialist Hydrochem, has welcomed the result of the Referendum – and has told other small business owners not to fear for their futures.

Bill regularly spoke of the benefits of Brexit in the build-up to the historic vote, and was therefore pleased with the results after Britain went to the polls on June 23.

He has followed the fall-out of the result with interest, and while he understands the anger being voiced from some quarters he insists that “when the dust settles”, an EU exit may not be a bad thing.

He said: “I said before the Referendum that I was voting leave. From a small business point of view I wanted to see an opportunity where businesses were allowed to look after themselves without having to deal with a political elite and all of the complexities attached to that.

“As things stood, there was a lack of accountability, and as each year passed there were more and more rules and regulations being introduced.

“There is a lot of red tape and bureaucracy involved in the EU, and that made things difficult for anyone trading within the walls of the EU.

“I have products which I’ve wanted to take to the marketplace, but the legislation which has been in place has made it difficult for me.

“But for the vast majority of small businesses, the butchers, bakers and candlestick makers, this won’t effect them. It will be business as usual for them.

“Things like health & safety in the workplace, working time directives, maternity leave, the national minimum wage and pension plans will all remain the same for small businesses.

“There is a lot being said and written at the moment, I understand the emotions are running high and it has been nasty. Everyone has a view on it, but there is a lot of scaremongering. In any vote, there are winners and losers.

“People are believing what they hear, and even now there is talk of a second referendum and legal loopholes which could be looked at. It’s all very volatile

“When the dust settles, I am confident we will flourish.”

Hydrochem, which broke the £1m turnover barrier at the end of the last financial year, operates with a 21-strong workforce and has plans in place for expansion.
