Redcar & Cleveland teens set to hit airwaves

Four young people involved with the Summer Programme of the National Citizen Service (NCS) in Redcar and East Cleveland are set to make their own radio programme, all about one of the region’s biggest Music Festivals!

Summer Sound 2016, which is the North East’s biggest Tributes band event, brings together ten acts over two nights in July at Gisborough Priory on Friday 29th and Saturday 30th July. An audience of around 4,000 people is set to enjoy the entertainment.

Imagine You Can, who run the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme in Redcar and East Cleveland, will be sending four young people for radio training at local radio station Zetland FM, based in the Redcar Beacon.

The group, under the watchful eye of radio tutor and Mid Morning presenter Julie Donaldson, will be putting together interviews and audience feedback from the Summer Sound event, which will go forward for a special 1 hour programme, broadcast on Zetland FM on Friday 5th August between 6-7pm.

The event, now into its fourth year, has seen sell-out audiences enjoy a range of popular tribute acts, celebrating the music of Boy George and Culture Club, U2, UB40, Bon Jovi, Blondie, The Stone Roses and Robbie Williams.

Jason Bushby from JAZ Events, the organisers of Summer Sound said: “We are passionate about this area and always aim to help local groups where we can. The event not only brings business into Guisborough and the surrounding areas but we also use local contractors and suppliers, so it’s a win for everyone.

“Our aim one day would be to establish Summer Sound as a major music festival, bringing in big names and putting the area on the map as a destination for festival goers. Over the past few years our ticket sales have been spreading further afield, so it’s definitely going in the right direction.

“Working with Zetland FM and other organisations like Imagine You Can to enable young people in this way, will help us achieve our goal of connecting more with the community in this area.

“I look forward to hearing the finished programme produced by the group on Zetland FM.”

Dave King, Director of Imagine You Can said: “We are very proud to be involved with Zetland FM, they have established themselves as a top class community radio station over the past year with excellent programmes covering all age groups. They have been very supportive of our National Citizen Service projects in Redcar and East Cleveland. This is another great opportunity for some of our NCS students to develop their presentation and communication skills putting together the one hour radio show.”

Julie Donaldson from Zetland FM said: “Radio is such a great way of boosting confidence and learning new skills that you can take into everyday life.

“I’m so looking forward to working with the group and sharing the passion that I have for the medium. I really hope they take a lot from the experience and produce some great content for Zetland FM.

“The radio station has really established itself in the area as both a fantastic community resource and a great listen!”

Tickets for Summer Sound 2016 are still on sale at www.summersoundevents.com and www.skiddle.com, along with selected local shops on Teesside.

NCS offers young people aged 16-17 the opportunity to experience the freedom of two weeks living away from home, take on new challenges, and gain essential skills. Places on the summer programme cost no more than £50 with remaining departure dates on 21 July, 25 July, and 2 August now limited in availability. Teenagers and their parents are being urged to call 0191 247 4020 or visit NCSNORTHEAST.co.uk to secure their place.
