The Big Birdhouse Tour takes flight

Art and nature is coming to life this summer, as The Big Birdhouse Tour arrives at intu Eldon Square.

The first national tour created exclusively by intu, is touring 15 intu centres, and is now nesting in Newcastle until Sunday 21 August.

Pupils from Tyne Theatre Stage School performed a specially commissioned dance to launch the Newcastle leg of the tour, with a piece inspired by the song Beautiful Creatures, from the movie Rio – the animated film about birds in Brazil.

intu Eldon Square is giving nature a home and exhibiting larger than life birdhouses, each individually and artfully designed by well-known British personalities to raise money for and awareness of the RSPB, Europe’s largest nature conservation charity. Celebrities including Steve Backshall, George Clark, Becky Adlington, Jo Whiley and Vic Reeves have contributed their designs to the fun, interactive and informative tour.

Denise Tweedy, assistant marketing manager at intu Eldon Square, said:

“We’re thrilled to be housing The Big Birdhouse Tour in the city centre this summer. We’re delighted to be welcoming the bright & bold birdhouses, creating a fun vibe in centre whilst also raising awareness of the RSPB and reaching over 30 million shoppers across the UK tour.”

Trevor Pereira, commercial and digital director of intu, added:

“In 2013 we launched the first ever national tour for the world famous Elephant Parade raising awareness of the plight of the Asian elephant to millions of our customers. This tour is all about creating a buzz around the nature that surrounds us in our own back gardens and countryside, inspiring people to look after the UK’s birds and wildlife so our towns, coasts and countryside are thriving with nature.”

Bryan Bland, head of corporate partnerships at the RSPB, said:

“Our partnership is a superb example of reaching out to people where they are and showcasing the relevance and importance of Giving Nature a Home. intu centres offer fantastic spaces to enable us to do something really fun and creative, and we hope to connect with people up and down the country to inspire and encourage them to connect with nature.”
