Coca Cola to invest £14m in Morpeth manufacturing site

Global soft drink giant Coca-Cola has announced it will invest £14m into developing its Morpeth plant.

The Northumberland base is the sole source of Schweppes Abbey Well Spring Water and since 2014 has been the only British plant producing glaceau smartwater, using a local spring. The investment will also fund production of a new sports cap format for the brand.

The multimillion pound investment, administrated by Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP), will triple production at the site, creating up to 56,000 bottles of water an hour.

The redeveloped processing facilities will be capable of sending out four million cases of water every year from the Coopies Lane site, enough to fill 100 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Cllr Scott Dickinson said: “It’s yet another sign that Morpeth, and indeed the whole county, is the place to do business.

“Coca-Cola’s continued confidence in the future here is also a tribute to the skills of its workforce as well as a great boost to the local economy.”

Jane Buckley, operations director at CCEP Morpeth, added: “We are dedicated to supporting local manufacturing.

“This investment in new equipment and production technology for Schweppes Abbey Well and glaceau smartwater is an exciting milestone for our Morpeth operations.”
