Young footballers enjoy ‘A Day as a Goalkeeper’

A local goalkeeping coach from Connah’s Quay has hailed his first official summer camp a success.

Ben Wynne, who runs Ben Wynne’s Goalkeeper Coaching, organised the day in which youngsters from Flintshire took up the opportunity for a full day’s training as a goalkeeper.

Aspiring shot-stoppers aged 7-12 from clubs such as Aston Rangers, Hawarden Rangers and Deeside Dragons attended the fully booked day based at Wepre Park on Friday 5 August.

The session involved practise of different goalkeeper technique in the morning, before fun and games in the afternoon where Wynne used a variety of normal, weighted and large footballs in order to train the young keepers reactions.

Not only did goalkeepers enjoy the day, but also outfield players Connor Parry, aged 10 and 9 year olds Freddie Evans and Jamie Edwards who switched from their usual roles to get their first taste of being in between the sticks.

Ben Wynne said: “The Day as a Goalkeeper was a fantastic opportunity for young goalkeepers to further their training and I’m really pleased to have had positive feedback from all who attended.

“As a goalkeeper, I know how important it is to practise as much as possible but to also have fun on the way as I have been inspired to become a coach as goalkeeper coaching is very rare in the Flintshire area.”

“I started my coaching just over a year ago, so to have a fully booked day was brilliant and it has even prompted me to hold a second session with thanks to FC Nomads of Connah’s Quay for allowing use of their facilities.”

Having played as a goalkeeper for gap Connah’s Quay Nomads Academy for a number of years as well as playing for Connah’s Quay Tigers, Wynne played for Flintshire at a county level, also representing North Wales and most recently a North East Wales FA u18s side managed by Gary Crewe.

He has enjoyed spells at high profile clubs such as Liverpool FC’s Academy,Tranmere Rovers and Wrexham and Chester’s Centres of Excellence. Ben holds an FAW C License and is working towards the next level of coaching at a national standard.

He is first team goalkeeper coach for FC Nomads of Connah’s Quay, who ply their trade in the Welsh National League, the third tier of football in Wales.

The next session takes place on Friday 19 August, starting at 10am through to 2:30pm with bookings now open. Players are advised to bring plenty of water, a packed lunch and will receive an official certificate of participation at the end of the day.

Ben Wynne’s Goalkeeper Coaching offers one to one sessions to a range of budding keepers at beginner, youth and semi professional levels. To book a session, contact bwgkc1@gmail.com or the official Facebook page at ‘Ben Wynne’s Goalkeeper Coaching’.
