Bolton family-run engineering firm acquires new premises following six-figure funding

A long-running engineering firm in Bolton has relocated its business after acquiring new premises at Mikar Business Park.

Merlin Engineering has taken a new 14,500 sq ft unit on the business park, which is just outside Bolton town centre, following a new six-figure funding line from the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Housed over one floor, the new premises are open plan, which the engineers say will provide space for more efficient production and work process, and has undergone a substantial renovation from local Bolton businesses Andy Wood Construction and electricians Chris Holt Limited.

It marks the first time that the firm, which was founded in 1969 by John and Barbara Anderton and is now run by the next generation of the family, has owned its own base after renting since its foundation.

Tony Anderton, who is Managing Director at Merlin Engineering commented: “I am delighted that we have been able to acquire and move to our own premises. It’s something we’ve been looking to do for the last 10 years. My family has spent almost 50 years developing and investing in our successful firm and I feel that this acquisition is a great move for our future.

“The new premises are in an excellent location and the carefully considered layout of the production area is allowing us to operate much more efficiently that we have been able to previously.”

Merlin has built up a reputation in the past four decades for its engineering work with a wide array of metals and plastics to create products in sectors including medical, printing, industrial doors and commercial vehicles.

The move to new premises was hailed by Ian Comber, Relationship Manager at Royal Bank of Scotland, which he believes will secure the firm’s long-term future.

He said: “Taking the decision to invest in their own premises is a great move for Merlin Engineering and I am glad that the funding deal we have provided has enabled them to undertake the purchase.

“Our aim is to support the growth and long term future of the companies that we work with and this is set to do exactly that for the firm.”
