International award win for Newcastle based NBS employee

“Too many people are killed or injured in the construction industry each year, despite it being one of the largest industry sectors” – a statement from this year’s Chartered Institute of Building International Outstanding Achievement Award winner, Stefan Mordue.

Stefan, who works for Newcastle-based NBS, the UK’s leading provider of construction information and knowledge management services, fought off stiff competition from around the world to be awarded the accolade within the Health and Safety category.

The award win is a result of an ambitious and self-driven project to research and find practical solutions of how health and safety can be incorporated into the BIM environment – thus, the successfully published book ‘BIM for Construction Health and Safety’ was born.

BIM, Building Information Modelling, is simply the means by which everyone can understand a building through the use of a digital model.

“We’re all extremely proud of Stefan here at NBS and I would like to congratulate him again on achieving this very prestigious award,” said NBS chief executive Richard Waterhouse.

“Working to BIM standards provides multiple benefits to construction projects and those involved in them – reduced carbon emissions, collaboration and improved profit margins - but never before has someone taken the time to look at how it can create safer and healthier environments, something that has been driven by Stefan’s enthusiasm and passion for this topic.”

35-year-old Stefan receives his award along with his recent appointment to Vice Chair of the CIOB (Chartered Institute of Building) Digital Data Working Group.

Saleem Akram, Director of Construction, Innovation and Development at CIOB said: “On behalf of the CIOB’s Health and Safety Group, it gives me enormous pleasure to congratulate Stefan on his achievements. Stefan’s research on the interaction between BIM and Health and Safety practises raises a number of interesting and thought provoking questions for industry. We thank Stefan for his exceptional contribution and wish him every success for the future.”

Commenting on his success, Stefan said: “The fact that my work has been recognised by the CIOB and for it to be acknowledged alongside the achievements of the other 2016 winners, gives me great professional and personal satisfaction.
