Mace set to deliver new £50m hospital at the former UCL student union

London-headquartered construction firm Mace have been appointed by University College London Hospitals NHS Trust to deliver a new £50m hospital in Central London.

The scheme on Huntley Street sits within the University College Hospital hub on the site of the old UCL student union and will combine the services currently provided at the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital (RNTNEH) and Eastman Dental Hospital (EDM), to create an ear, nose, throat and dental centre.

Set to open in 2019, the pair describe the scheme as a ‘modern centre’ featuring a complex and innovative design that will reflect the need of patients, with particular consideration given to the needs of those with sensory needs and hearing loss.

The new facility’s close proximity to UCL will also facilitate joint working, research and clinical trials and will open in the same year as the university’s new surgery and cancer building .

UCLH’s chief executive, Sir Robert Naylor, commented: “Fifteen years ago we had a vision to develop a world leading hospital and university campus and this new clinical facility is another major step forward.

“I am absolutely delighted that this new building will be matching the internationally renowned clinical excellence of the EDH and RNTNEH with a world class building to further facilitate improvements in care.”

Mace have a wealth of experience in healthcare construction projects in the capital, having previously worked on the Positron Emission Tomography Centre for Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital and the refurbishment of Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, along with a range of other projects in the sector.

Terry Spraggett, Director for Public Sector Construction at Mace, said: “I’m delighted that Mace has been appointed by UCLH as main contractor on this significant and complex hospital project, which is challenging both in terms of the construction and logistics of the site.

“We look forward to bringing our experience to this project and helping UCLH realise its vision to deliver better treatment and care for patients,” he added.
