Wirral Council plans to invest £2m in leisure assets for 2016/17

The Oval Leisure Centre in Bebington set for £1m overhaul

Work is about to begin on a new fitness suite at the Oval in Bebington.

Wirral Council will plough almost £986k into the leisure centre to create an improved fitness suite, exercise studio, café and disabled access.

The project, which forms part of ongoing work to revamp leisure facilities across the borough, follows similar upgrades carried out at Guinea Gap Leisure Centre in Seacombe and West Kirby Concourse.

In recent years, Wirral Council has invested £2m in leisure assets and plans to invest a further £2m for 2016/17.

Cllr Ann McLachlan, the authority’s Cabinet Member for Transformation, Leisure and Culture, said: ’This is the latest step in our programme of improvements, to ensure we can guarantee a state-of-the-art leisure offer right across Wirral, in line with our 2020 pledges to ensure leisure and cultural opportunities are available to all.

“Phase one of work at The Oval will create the new fitness suite, and after that we will be creating new exercise studios and a new café and toilets. There will also be accessibility improvements.”

She added: “There will be some disruption during the work, but I’d ask people to bear with us as it will be well worth it and result in a leisure centre we can get really excited about.”
