Last big Crossrail contract snapped up by Costain joint venture
One of the last big Crossrail contracts has been awarded to a Costain joint venture as the massive infrastructure project enters its final stages ahead of the line’s launch in 2018.
The contract for a £26m maintenance facility at Plumstead in the Royal Borough of Greenwich will now be delivered by a joint venture consisting of Costain Alstom Transport and TSO, who fended off competition from Balfour Beatty and Vinci.
According to Construction Enquirer, the new facility will have capacity for eight passenger trains and includes amenities such as staff accommodation, a maintenance building, and staff car park.
In awarding the final contract, the Crossrail team has drawn a line under one of the largest ever procurement efforts ever in the UK, which has all contributed to the construction of the new 73-mile Elizabeth Line which encompasses central London, Berkshire, Essex and Buckinghamshire.
The project has cost over £14.5bn and is currently the biggest construction project in Europe.
Following the closure of the development’s procurement phase, Simon Wright, Programme Director at Crossrail commented: “The procurement of billions of pounds worth of work for the Crossrail programme has been a monumental exercise.
“The contracts we’ve signed with our principal contractors have set the future standard for major UK infrastructure projects, helping us to deliver more than 550 apprenticeships, reducing our impact on the environment and spreading the economic benefits of the project.”
