Everton FC new stadium plans 'closer than ever', says Liverpool Mayor

The Mayor of Liverpool has this week insisted that Everton FC’s plan to move from their long-time Goodison Park home is now closer than ever.

Responding to an EFC fan’s query on Twitter yesterday (August 29), Joe Anderson provided an update on the club’s new stadium development.

He tweeted: “It’s closer now than it was last month and closer now than it’s ever been.

“All working hard to make it happen.”

Mayor Anderson, who is an EFC supporter, also hinted that the Bramley Moore dock – one of two sites being considered for the new stadium – could be the preferred location.

He wrote: “The Moore the merrier for me.”

Earlier this year, the Toffees scrapped plans to build a new home at Walton Hall Park in favour of either a site in Liverpool’s docklands or another at Stonebridge Cross.

Analysis

While we can’t take anything written in a tweet – even by someone as closely involved in the project as Joe Anderson – as set in stone, this latest hint will nevertheless have a lot of fans excited.

The Blues have been based at Goodison for years and years, and although many EFC supporters will no doubt miss their long-time home, many Moore (sorry) will see the construction of a new multi-million pound stadium as a step in the right direction in terms of stimulating investment in the club.

Personally I think the docklands base would be the better of the two sites for Everton, so I hope to see some confirmation in the coming months.
