Stallholders sought as new £2.7m Scarborough market reaches completion

Scarborough Council is seeking new stallholders to take up shops and stalls at the newly-renovated Scarborough Market, once the site opens following £2.7m transformation work.

The new multi-million pound revamp at the St Helen’s Square market is currently underway and will see the creation of a new mezzanine upper floor with added space for new shops, offices and a cafe.

Due to open in December, the council is now seeking applications from new stallholders to take up space on the new mezzanine or within the existing market hall to match its vision for a ‘new 21st Century market’, with demand for new units expected to be high.

A new prospectus has been put together by the council in an effort to attract new traders, with a range of shop and stall units in varying sizes offered on ‘in and out’ terms.

Commenting on the council’s hopes for the refurbished market, Councillor Bill Chatt, Scarborough Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Public Health and Housing, said: “We already have a fantastic mix of fresh food and unique and unusual gifts, clothes and collectibles in the market.

“What we are looking for now are some fresh ideas to help us complete the new market and to help us create a thriving, hustle-bustle market loved by locals and visitors alike. We are really excited to see wonderful new proposals coming forward to be a part of the new market.”

The market is to remain open during the works with newly-created units available for new traders by mid-October.
