MP visits community-minded young people in Alnwick

Young people taking part in this summer’s National Citizen Service (NCS) in Alnwick have been visited by Berwick-upon-Tweed MP Anne-Marie Trevelyan.

NCS is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity open to all 16-17 year olds that takes place in the summer or autumn holidays. So far over 275,000 young people have benefited from taking part including hundreds from Northumberland that have been taking part over their summer holiday.

The part-residential scheme involves teenagers building new skills, improving their confidence and meeting new people at an outdoor activity centre before returning to their local area to develop skills for work and life that help boost their CVs and personal statements. The programme enables young people to contribute to their community through the creation of a social action project that makes a difference to their local area.

Visiting an NCS team at Alnwick Community Centre as the group carried out their social action project, Anne-Marie said: “It was fantastic to meet some really motivated young people who are learning so much about teamwork, leadership and their own unique skills.

“They all have bright futures ahead and I wish them well in their plans for future careers.”

The group was led by Northumberland County Council’s Youth Service, an NCS delivery partner in the area.

Running all across the North East, government-backing means that NCS will never cost more than £50, which covers the whole experience. Bursaries are available on a case-by-case basis too; young people eligible for free school meals can take part for £10.

The next NCS programme will be departing during the autumn half-term on Friday 21st or Monday 24th October, with young people aged 16 or 17 in year 12, 13 or comparable provision.

Teenagers or parents should call 0191 247 4020 or visit NCSNORTHEAST.co.uk to book a place.
