East Riding Local Plan to boost housing

With plans in place to invest in four new developments in the East Riding, which is contributing 236 jobs and £116.7million to the local economy, Barratt Developments has praised the East Riding of Yorkshire Local Plan as being both pioneering and an opportunity to address the housing shortage in the Pocklington area. Having been approved to go ahead earlier this month, the plan is set to provide new opportunities for house building in the region – helping to tackle the shortage of homes in the area.

With both first time buyers and those looking to step up the property ladder struggling to find homes to meet their needs, the new plan is expected to help boost the local economy with the provision of over 23,800 net additional homes in the district between now and 2029. Paul Newman, Managing Director at Barratt Developments Yorkshire East, which includes both the Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes brands, comments on the new plans: “Buyers throughout Yorkshire have been struggling to both step on and move up the property ladder for years. A lack of suitable housing for the region has seen many families having to move away or indeed stay put. This new plan will inject fluidity to the market and provide residents across the region with an opportunity to invest in property for their future.

“As only the third council in the region to implement a local plan, the East Riding can expect a major boost to its economy. Not only will individuals move out to the area from locations such as York - where homes are hard to come by - investments will also be made into local schools, highway systems and other community projects through Section 106 donations. In all, this means the area is set to welcome millions of pounds in investment. In addition, there will be a significant number of jobs created off the back of the plan, mainly through housebuilders employing local subcontractors. We already have sites launching in Anlaby, Hessle, Beverley and Pocklington delivering 236 jobs per annum and an economic impact of £116.7million to the area throughout the duration of the schemes.

“At present we are the only housebuilder able to deliver 1,400 properties throughout Yorkshire this year, so this move, and others like it, will see major improvements for the East Riding, and indeed the wider county, and will act as a strong example for other councils working to implement local plans to help achieve the Government’s target of one million new homes by 2020. We are delighted that the plans have been adopted and look forward to seeing the positive impact this is set to have on the East Riding coming to fruition.”
