Community creates a sweet slice of history

York residents have joined forces with David Wilson Homes to fill and bury a time capsule at York’s iconic housing development The Chocolate Works. Built on the former Terry’s Chocolate Factory, the new development has helped to deliver new life to the former brown field site.

Having received almost 100 submissions from local schools, residents, former factory workers and historians from across the city, the housebuilder invited a handful of contributors to the burial of the time capsule this week. Submissions involved drawings from local school children, in addition to memorabilia and photographs from those who used to work at the factory.

Paul Hogan, Sales Director at David Wilson Homes, commented: “We have been overwhelmed by the support and interest we have had from the local community and further afield. The Chocolate Works is a pioneering design, so we’re not surprised that it’s been well received, but we are very proud to be working so closely with the community to help celebrate the site’s rich history.

“We weren’t expecting to receive so many entries, but it’s fantastic to see how many memories there are of the factory across the city – especially as even youngsters from local schools have shared their thoughts. The project spans the generations and it’s this that really makes this project special. We’ve even had a submission from as far away as New Zealand – demonstrating just how far the news of the development’s new lease of life has spread.”

Benefiting from excellent commuter links by rail and road, The Chocolate Works had become a hot spot with house buyers. Homes at The Chocolate Works start from £334,995 with some properties available now. This includes The Empress, an impressive three bedroom, three-storey family home complete with striking terraces offering views across the Knavesmire, York Racecourse and the historic city, and the Leetham, a luxury four bedroom home complete with a contemporary first floor glass conservatory.
