Costain tipped for £120m Gatwick railway redevelopment
The £120m redevelopment of Gatwick Airport’s railway is set to get underway imminently with construction firm Costain widely tipped to deliver the project.
Plans for a new transport hub at the Essex airport include the construction of a transparent roof in the main terminal area, doubling the size of the concourse area along with more lifts and escalators to support the additional train services planned from London and Brighton.
According to Construction Enquirer, Costain looks set to be awarded the contract for the project after working with the airport on the development phase of the project over the summer, following on from similar train station redevelopment works in Reading and at London Bridge.
Exact terms of the deal are yet to be finalised with Network Rail, Gatwick and the Department of Transport still to come to an agreement on how funding will be structured.
A spokesperson for Network Rail commented: “Network Rail is working with Costain to develop a new station at Gatwick Airport.
“Costain is working through early GRIP 3 and we will be moving into GRIP 4 on the project. At this point, given the early stages of the development, it’s not possible to put a cost on the scheme, or a value to Costain’s contract.”
