Consultation on £45m Liverpool transport revamp gets underway

A month-long public consultation on an eight-figure revamp of Liverpool city centre’s transport infrastructure is set to launch this Thursday (October 6).

The £45m development will include eight major projects to transform how people move around the city on foot or by bike, car, bus and coach.

Key aspects of the Liverpool City Centre Connectivity Scheme (LCCC) include a major extension of St George’s Plateau and reducing The Strand from eight to just four lanes, adding new trees to the route along with a cycle lane.

Liverpool City Council has put together an online survey to gain feedback from the public. Additionally, the authority will host a four-day public roadshow from next Tuesday (October 11).

The council is also calling on city businesses to offer their views on the scheme, with the Liverpool BID Company due to hold a Business Breakfast Briefing on Thursday (October 6) at 9am in Aloft Liverpool.

Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Cllr Malcolm Kennedy, said: “Our city centre welcome needs a major upgrade to the standard befitting a world class city.

’’With a growing residential population, a huge rise in visitors and £10bn of major developments in the pipeline, how we navigate around it needs a radical rethink in key locations and some major improvements.“

He continued: ’’Each of these projects will open up a new world of possibilities to further accelerate the future growth of Liverpool and the wider city region.

“This scheme will make a huge difference to how everyone will moves around the city centre which is why we want to hear as many views as possible, be they pedestrians, cyclists or motorists.’’

Due for completion before the end of 2019, LCCC will get £38.4m from the Local Growth Fund along with local match funding of £6.3m.

The development forms part of Liverpool City Council’s wider £250m Better Roads transport investment programme.
