Nottingham garden project boosted by £1,000

A children’s charity that is looking to renovate a garden for a disabled Nottingham boy has been awarded £1,000 by Persimmon Homes.

WellChild plans to make the property in West Bridgford more accessible for the 12 year old who has Global Development Delay (GDD) a condition which affects his learning and the strength in his muscles.

They applied for the money through the Persimmon Homes Community Champions initiative. It is a national programme where charities and groups can apply for funding up to the value of £1,000 to match cash they have already raised themselves.

WellChild has carried out three projects in the last year in Nottingham but in its latest Helping Hands project they will make the youngster’s back garden more accessible for him in his wheelchair.

Melanie Parker, senior fundraiser at WellChild, said: “We complete bedroom and garden makeovers in the homes of children with complex care needs – creating safe and accessible spaces for children and young people to play and enjoy.

“Our Helping Hands makeovers typically take two days, in which we use volunteers from local companies to help make the projects possible. “We heard about this project for this particular young man and we wanted to help out in anyway we could.

“The projects typically cost around £2,000 so Persimmon Homes’ donation puts us half way there.”

Nadine O’Dowd, head of sales for Persimmon Homes North Midlands, said: “WellChild do fantastic work for people in need in the community and we’re pleased to see Nottinghamshire is receiving their support.

“We wanted to provide our own support and we are delighted to contribute £1,000 to their cause. “As always it was a difficult decision to select our Community Champions, but I would encourage any charity or organisation that missed out this time to apply again.”

Persimmon Homes is currently building in Nottinghamshire at its Hawkers Place site, Watnall Road, Hucknall. A selection of 2, 3 and 4 bedroom homes are available with prices starting from £111,996.
