Church’s £150k project gets boost from housebuilder

A church looking to extend its facilities has been awarded £1,000 by Persimmon Homes.

Seymour Road Baptist Church in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire, wants to revamp its current building so it can provide more events for the community.

The project is set to cost £150,000 and officials from Seymour Road have been looking to meet their target through a series of fundraisers.

They applied for the money through the Persimmon Homes Community Champions initiative. It is a national programme where charities and groups can apply for funding up to the value of £1,000 to match cash they have already raised themselves.

Graham Conway, a member of Seymour Road Baptist Church said: “Due to our proximity to the new developments, we’re considering how we can best serve and support the new community that will be moving in over the next few years.

“As such we have taken the decision to refurbish and extend our own building so that we can hold more community based groups.

“We already run several community based groups for all ages such as toddler groups where lots of local Mum’s bring their kids and we are just starting a ‘Memory Café’ to support people with dementia.

“The church has appointed an architect to get plans drawn up with initial estimates suggesting a cost of around £150k - which for a small church is a lot of money.

“This donation from Persimmon Homes North Midlands is great help to us and help take another step to our overall total.”

Nadine O’Dowd, head of sales for Persimmon Homes North Midlands, said: “The Seymour Road Baptist Church does so much to help the local community and its plans for a bigger and better church sounds exciting.

“We wanted to support them in any way we could and I’m delighted we can contribute £1,000 to their cause.

“As always it was a difficult decision to select our Community Champions, but I would encourage any charity or organisation that missed out this time to apply again.”
