Finalists announced for Solent Design Awards

The search to find the Solent’s most show-stopping construction projects has narrowed, with the shortlist for the 2016 Solent Design Awards revealed.

A record-breaking residential tower, a brewery housed in a 14th century wool house and a conference centre featuring a giant red pod are among the eight projects that have been whittled down by judges as finalists.

Architects, local authorities and other businesses have been putting forward their entries for the last three months and judges have selected the following projects for the prestigious shortlist:

Paul Ramshaw, from the Quality Places Practitioners’ Group which is organising the event, said: “The quality of entries this year has been fantastic and whittling the shortlist down to just eight was an incredibly tough job for our judges. There are some industry-leading examples of placemaking and buildings making a real difference to the people and environments around them.”

While the winners of the ‘Quality Residential Place Award’ and ‘Quality Place Award’ will be decided by judges, the public has the chance to pick the winner of the ‘People’s Choice Award’.

From today (September 30) people will be able to vote for their favourite of all the shortlisted entries atwww.solentdesignawards.org.uk.

Paul added: “There are some well-known schemes within this year’s shortlist and we hope members of the public who use them will get behind their favourites and vote online. It’s a unique opportunity for people to have their say on which are the best developments in the Solent.”

Voting will close on October 31 and the winner will be announced on the awards evening, which takes place on November 24 at the Spark building at Southampton Solent University.
