Northumberland construction company invests in new premises following growth period
A Northumberland-based construction company has announced further investment as it officially opens additional premises.
Launched three years ago, Smailes Construction’s head office is situated in The Fourways in the centre of Amble.
The company has increased its turnover from an initial £500k to £1.5m in its second year of trading and is expected to top the £2m mark at the end of the company’s current financial year this October.
Following this growth period, Smailes decided to launch huxmar, a subsidiary which specialises in designing and building bespoke summerhouses and kitchens in order to broaden the range of services it can offer, as well as the value of contracts it is able to deliver.
As a result, Smailes has taken on a new unit signing a five-year lease on new premises at Amble Industrial Estate, Amble.
To mark the acquisition of the new unit, Smailes Construction’s managing director, David Smailes was recently joined by staff, supply chain partners, students from James Calvert Spence Spence College (JCSC) and England and Newcastle United footballing legend, Peter Beardsley, at an official opening event.
The new unit is set to double up as a workshop for the assembly and manufacture of bespoke joinery items, and will also be a dedicated showroom for huxmar’s range of kitchen and summerhouse products.
David Smailes said: “In the past three years we have seen significant growth in annual turnover together with an increase in opportunities to win work across a diverse range of sectors including education and commercial property as well as high-end residential property.
“The increase in demand from the private client sector led to the launch of huxmar and hence the need to take on more space.
“The new showroom will allow us to grow the huxmar brand, as prospective clients are able to see first-hand the range of kitchens available and the standard of workmanship they can expect when choosing to work with us.”
Smailes Construction currently employs 16 and is expected to announce the arrival of a number of new staff in the coming weeks.
