BT to create 70 South Tyneside jobs

Telecoms giant BT is set to create 70 employment opportunities at its offices in South Tyneside.

The firm, which filled almost 60 posts in the area earlier this year, said the new jobs will mainly be in sales and customer service.

BT’s North East regional director, Farooq Hakim, said: “Back in March we set out to recruit 50 people in the South Tyneside area and thanks to the high calibre of applicants actually recruited nearer to 60.

“Following on from that success we are now looking for a further 70 people to join us.”

He continued: “This is the perfect opportunity for someone with a genuine passion for brilliant customer service who is looking for a secure, well-paid and flexible job with long term career prospects and excellent training in one of the UK’s top companies.”

The recruitment drive forms part of BT’s £80m plan to improve its customer service offer over the next two years.

South Tyneside Council leader Cllr Iain Malcolm welcomed the news.

He said: “Creating more job opportunities is a key priority for the council as we work with our partners to reduce unemployment levels and create the right conditions for business growth and investment across the borough.

“Our partnership with BT continues to be a major success story and one which is helping us to realise our ambition of bringing high quality jobs to South Tyneside.”

BT plans to hold an open day at its building on Harton Quay, South Shields, this Saturday (October 29) between 11am and 3pm.
