Training provider tackles gender pay gap trap

To mark Equal Pay Day (November 10), a Cardiff-based training provider is offering a unique training session for women on empowering and asserting themselves at work.

Cortecs, which offers a distinctive style of psychology-powered leadership and management training, will be offering a unique, bespoke training session in a bid to support professional women in Wales.

Women still earn significantly less than men throughout their professional lives, and the current pay gap for full-time workers stands at 13.9%*. This means that for every pound earned by a man working in a full-time role, women will only earn 86p. Based to this figure, Equal Pay Day marks the day of the year that women effectively stop earning an income in relation to their male counterparts. This year, Equal Pay Day falls on November 10.

To show support for working women, founder and director of Cortecs, Helen Jones, will host a special session the evening before Equal Pay Day, designed to help women find the confidence to speak up in the workplace and hone the vital negotiation skills to help them equate their male colleagues when it comes to pay.

She explains: “It’s not uncommon for professional women to experience situations at work where they smile and nod politely but then berate themselves later for not speaking up about certain issues. The phenomenon can affect anyone, and even women at the top of their fields sometimes suffer from ‘imposter syndrome,’ where they doubt their abilities and feel undeserving of the success they’ve achieved.

“Giving women the self-assurance to know their own value and the confidence to speak up about the issues that are important to them is vital in the journey towards pay equality. This unique training session has been designed specifically to arm women with these skills, and take a practical step towards tackling the gender pay gap.”

Helen is a qualified psychometrician, holds a Master’s degree in Occupational Psychology, and has more than 20 years’ experience working in corporate training.

The session will host activities and workshops aimed to help women to consistently find their confidant voice and confront gender bias in the workplace.

Takes place at Cortecs’ offices off Ocean Way in Cardiff on November 9. Spaces cost £5 with all proceeds being donated to the Fawcett Society, the company that spearheads Equal Pay Day in the UK.
