Home Bargains commits to Liverpool’s £150m Project Jennifer scheme

Regeneration firm St. Modwen has announced a deal to bring Home Bargains to its £150m Project Jennifer development in Liverpool.

The retailer signed up for a 20,000 sq ft unit at the Great Homer Street scheme’s District Centre, which will open to the public in Summer 2017.

Home Bargains operations director Joe Morris hailed Project Jennifer as a “historic location” for the discount brand.

He said: “The Great Homer Street area is where our family’s retail roots began.

“We are thrilled to be opening here and welcoming new customers through the door to offer our customers top branded goods at exceptionally low prices.”

Home Bargains’ parent company, TJ Morris Ltd, was founded in Liverpool and is currently headquartered in the city. Dating back to the mid-1970s, today the brand encompasses a network of more than 350 stores.

St. Modwen projects director Paul Batho commented: “A successful, local and national brand, TJ Morris is the largest employer on Merseyside and is the largest independent grocer in the country.

“We’re really pleased to announce its commitment to Great Homer Street where over 70 new jobs will be created.”

Speaking further, Paul said St. Modwen is seeing “real progress” on site, with construction work having started on the scheme’s new Sainsbury’s supermarket in recent weeks.

He continued: “Home Bargains’ commitment to Great Homer Street will further strengthen the attractiveness of the new District Centre.

“We are currently in detailed discussions with other potential occupiers and we are looking forward to making further announcements in the near future.”

Real estate firms Hitchcock Wright and Colliers International, joint agents on Project Jennifer, are currently marketing the scheme’s remaining retail space. Liverpool-based commercial estate agent bennett represented Home Bargains.
