Galliford Try Partnerships to build 160 Salford properties for Salix Homes

The first phase of a project to build over 160 new homes in Salford is about to get underway.

Housing provider Salix Homes tasked building firm Galliford Try Partnerships with delivering the first two of four phases of the development, which will create new properties on the Beechfarm Estate – also known as the Poets Estate – in Swinton.

Salix Homes has worked closely with the Poets Estate Steering Group to develop proposals for part of the estate where properties are affected by historic issues.

The steering group, comprising residents, councillors and representatives from the social housing provider, voted in favour of redevelopment.

As part of the proposals, the scheme will see 146 affected houses knocked down and replaced with 161 new builds.

Of the total, 120 will be prioritised for existing tenants whose properties are affected while the remaining 41 will be for sale or shared ownership.

Salix Homes’ executive director of operations, Sue Sutton, said: “Awarding this contract to renowned construction firm Galliford Try Partnerships, is a pivotal moment for us as a housing association, as it’s our first housebuilding development since becoming a stand-alone housing provider.

“We have worked very closely with the community throughout this process and we appreciate this has been a long process for everyone involved – but we will continue to keep residents involved every step of the way as we begin work on the ground soon – breathing new life into this vibrant community.”

Brendan Blythe, managing director of Galliford Try Partnerships North West, commented: “This is a significant development for us and one we’re excited to be involved with.

“Bringing our experience of building sustainable communities we will strive to create affordable homes that local people can be proud of for future generations to come.”

Phases one and two will see 60 properties demolished and 70 built.

Work on the first phase is due to start at the end of November, with the whole scheme expected to complete by Summer 2019.
