PM talks up Sheffield’s growing tech sector ahead of first trade trip

Sheffield tech firm The Floow is accompanying Theresa May on her first trade trip as Prime Minister.

The company, which serves insurers around the world, is joining the three-day mission to India, which has been set up to showcase the best of British small and medium sized companies, and will include an Anglo-Indian technology event jointly hosted by Theresa May and Indian PM Narendra Modi.

The company’s CEO and founder Aldo Monteforte, who yesterday boarded the new Prime Ministerial plane alongside Theresa May, represents one of 39 firms taking part in the trip.

Following recent expansion into the Chinese market, this trade mission will allow The Floow to pitch for new business in Asia’s second largest economy.

Prime Minister Theresa May said: “Sheffield’s growing tech sector is an exciting prospect for the future of the city.

“With more than 25,000 people already employed in the city’s digital industries and two top-class universities producing the talent of tomorrow, the prospects for future growth are there for all to see.

“The Floow is a great example of the sort of firm that will help drive Sheffield’s future economic growth – and that’s why I am so pleased they are joining me in India.”

The Fllow is spearheading work to tackle air pollution and opportunities for integrated traffic management.

By using sophisticated analytics, it helps support fairer pricing in the insurance sector, and improved digital services.

The visit will include a trip to South Asia’s largest tech fair and is designed to help boost hi-tech trade between India and the UK.

The Prime Minister will use the trip to deliver on the ambitious vision for Britain after Brexit that she set out in a speech last month. She spoke about forging a new global role for the UK as a country with the self-confidence and the freedom to look beyond the continent of Europe.

She will also use the visit to deliver on her pledge to create an economy that truly works for all, by introducing new and emerging enterprises, as well as more established players, to the key Indian market.
