New classroom gives village a kids’ club

A KIDS’ club has opened in a North Yorkshire village after work was completed on a new school classroom.

Northallerton construction company Walter Thompson finished work at Ainderby Steeple Church of England Primary School in time for the start of the new term.

The family-owned company built a new classroom for the school’s Reception and Year One pupils, but the space has also been used to launch Ainderby Kids Club, which provides before and after school care for schoolchildren.

“We’re delighted with our new classroom and the Kids Club will make a big difference to both pupils and parents,” said school headteacher Fiona Sharp.

“The classroom has vast windows overlooking fields and doors accessing our large outdoor play area. It has been fitted with the very latest technology, including energy efficient lighting.

“Walter Thompson have been a pleasure to work with, polite, supportive and flexible. They’ve worked hard to keep any disruption to a minimum and have also gone the extra mile - on the day of the opening Site Manager Steve Thompson worked with the children to help build a wall with rubber bricks and sand,” Mrs Sharp added.

Walter Thompson Contracts Manager Jason Henderson said: “Everyone at the school has been helpful and patient and the Walter Thompson team has enjoyed working on site. We have a reputation of working closely with clients to ensure minimum disruption.

“As well as the new classroom, we made some minor amendments to other parts of the school, installed a new storm water drainage system and extended the existing playground.”

Walter Thompson have vast experience working in schools and earlier this year won a national award for their work at Linthorpe School in Middlesbrough. The company was declared winner of the Most Considerate Site 2016 at the Considerate Constructors Scheme’s National Site Awards. The award was given within the category of sites with a project value of £500k to £5m.

At the same awards ceremony, the company was awarded a Bronze Award for its work at Stokesley Primary School.
