Work Completes Transforming Historic Leeds Building

WORK has completed transforming a historic building on Clarendon Road, close to Leeds city centre, into 25 student apartments, which have proved to be immediately popular and are already fully let.

The development, at 12 Clarendon Road, is now known as Fairbairn Residences. It has been developed by property company YPP and designed by Brewster Bye Architects, which are both based in Leeds.

The work has seen an existing Grade II listed building converted into 16 apartments and a further nine apartments have been built in the grounds of the property. The apartments are a mix of studios as well as one and two bedroom units.

The main building dates back to the late nineteenth century and was designed by renowned architect George Corson. He designed many well-known buildings in Leeds including Leeds Grand Theatre and Leeds Central Library.

Omar Al-Nujaifi from YPP explains: “It’s great to create a scheme that safeguards the future of a prominent listed building and complements the conservation area that surrounds it. This development gives students the opportunity to live in a superb standard of accommodation that is within easy walking distance of Leeds’s two universities, as well as the city’s main attractions, shops, bars and restaurants. As a result, it’s been extremely well-received and we’re delighted to complete work and see it fully occupied.”

Chris Austin, Managing Director at Brewster Bye Architects, adds: “From the outset, it was important to create a scheme that remained true to how George Corson had originally designed the building. We worked hard to retain as much of its original character as possible and also made its garden into one of the development’s standout features.

“The new build aspect integrates extremely well with the original building and brings a contrasting, contemporary feel to the scheme. It’s fantastic that it’s proving so popular and to see the development now bustling with life.”
