Programme to get girls in tech hits Newcastle

An initiative encouraging girls and young women to pursue careers in the technology sector has landed in Newcastle.

The FDisruptors programme, developed by CEO Debbie Edwards, started in the North West earlier this year.

A group of ten young women came together on a mission to spread the word to their peers about the opportunities in tech and why more girls should consider it as a career.

Coming to Newcastle tech hub Campus North, the FDisruptors team shared their experience and met with Chi Onwurah, MP for Newcastle Central and Shadow Minister for Industrial Strategy, Science and Innovation.

Young women, teachers and entrepreneurs were also present to hear about how the programme has helped young women so far and plans to have the initiative roll out across the North East.

The event was part of Campus North’s Tech for Life initiative which aims to help plug the digital skills gap by offering support and training for all.

Chi Onwurah, MP for Newcastle Central and Shadow Minister for Industrial Strategy, Science and Innovation, said, “It was a pleasure to meet the young women, hear what they’re doing and share my experience in my career both as an engineer and as a politician.

“There is an overall digital skills gap but there is also a real need to get more young women interested in a career in these areas.

“Being able to support each other as well as have experienced mentors is a great way to learn and I look forward to having the initiative here in the North East.”
