Ryan wraps himself in apprenticeship success

A Gateshead man has just completed his year-long apprenticeship and says he has enjoyed every minute, but the latest news has put the biggest smile on Ryan Hall’s face. His hard work and dedication has been rewarded with a job at the business he quickly grew to love.

Ryan, 18, won his apprenticeship last year with fish and chip shop supplier Henry Colbeck. Supported by local skills provider Ingeus, he worked tirelessly as an operative at the Team Valley factory, where he soon impressed his bosses with his willingness to learn.

“Although I left school in 2014, I was determined this was not going to be the end of my education,” said Ryan. “Rather than apply for university, I wanted to continue by learning and earning at the same time and I have enjoyed finding out as much as I can about my job. I’m really thrilled that this will now continue and I will do my best for my employer as well as for myself.”

During his apprenticeship, Ryan developed his warehouse skills as well as learning about food and hygiene, how to operate machinery and health and safety. He also became a leading hand for a short time, and rose to the challenge. “I studied for my qualifications in warehousing and distribution, and completed a leadership course which will be great for me as my career progresses,” he added.

“Henry Colbeck needs people like Ryan so that we can plan ahead,” said operations manager Graham Lee. “Our workforce is extremely dedicated and so vacancies rarely arise. However, Ryan demonstrated to us, through his hard work, that he really wanted to be part of our team and I was delighted to tell him he had succeeded.”

“Ryan is the perfect example of how an apprenticeship should work,” added Ingeus training advisor Phil Dorn. “He saw what could be ahead and got stuck in. Whilst he was doing that, Ingeus supported him and helped him develop the right skills so that he could match the needs of his job. Now, he has the perfect opportunity to make great progress at Henry Colbeck, and we look forward to hearing of his further success.”
