TfL pay gap at 19% as Khan vows there's more to be done
New gender pay data released by City Hall has revealed significant pay disparity between men and women across the Greater London Authority, with the extent of the pay gap in body’s such as Transport for London (TfL) and the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) branded ‘unacceptable’ by the Mayor.
The figures, released as part of Sadiq Khan’s manifesto commitment to publish gender pay data for all staff at City Hall, show that the average full-time pay for women across the GLA’s ‘functional bodies’ is noticeably less than their male counterparts.
In bodies including TfL, where the gap stands at 19%, and the LLDC, where there is a sizeable 35% gap, the disparity dwarves the UK average pay gap of 9.4% and the London-wide average of 11.9%.
Female members of the Greater London Authority are paid, on average, 4.6% less than male colleagues while in the Metropolitan Police the gap stands at 11.6%.
In fact, it’s only the London Fire Brigade out of the GLA’s ‘functional bodies’ where there is no pay disparity, with both male and female full-time workers paid £16.17 per hour.
The Mayor said: “It is clear from the data I have published today that we still have plenty of work to do to close the gender pay gap across the Greater London Authority and I will be working with all functional bodies to do everything we can to promote gender equality.
“It is unacceptable that in 2016 in London, the most progressive city in the world, that your gender determines how much you get paid and your career prospects.
“I have vowed to be a proud feminist at City Hall, and I will remove any barriers to women by adopting the highest possible standards for fair pay, good working conditions and gender equality.
“Clearly we all need to do much more to put our own houses in order. I am determined to lead by example and I hope businesses across the capital will follow suit as we strive to create a fairer society for all.”
