Young joiner scoops top award
A young apprentice joiner has been recognised for his outstanding work by the UK’s leading housebuilder.
Kevin Morrison was named the Trade Apprentice of the Year 2016 at the Persimmon Homes national Young Achievers awards last week.
Kevin, who lives in Renfrew, followed in his father’s footsteps when he joined Persimmon Homes West Scotland at the age of just 16 in 2013 after completing an SVQ in carpentry and joinery.
His introduction to working on-site began when he joined his father, John, a bricklayer at Persimmon Homes West Scotland, for a week of work experience.
Kevin 19, was keen to follow in his father’s footsteps deciding that joining one of the UK’s largest housebuilders apprentice scheme would give him the experience and training that he was looking for.
Kevin said: “It was a fantastic experience to be part of the awards ceremony at our head office in York. I considered being nominated for the trade apprentice award a real honour and didn’t expect to win at all - I still can’t believe it.
“I have worked on numerous sites in Bishopton, Baillieston and Linwood with great tradesmen and have learned so much. I really appreciate the guidance that the team have given me and the ongoing support and encouragement.
“Now in my final year of my apprenticeship I am setting my sights on developing even further to hopefully becoming a site agent and ultimately a site manager in the not too distant future.”
Alan Prickett, construction director at Persimmon Homes West Scotland nominated Kevin saying that it was an easy decision to put him forward for the award: “Kevin is a hard worker who pushes himself both onsite and in college where he achieved ‘A’ scores for all aspects of his work.
The region’s Managing Director Doug Law added: “We have consistently produced award winning trade apprentices over the last three years and Kevin is a fantastic example of the quality that we are developing.
“Kevin’s success has rippled through our region creating a sense of excitement and motivation amongst all of our staff, but especially our young apprentices.”
Persimmon Homes is one of the UK’s largest housebuilders, building more than 14,000 homes each year.
