Approval granted for 228 apartment scheme in Leeds city centre

Plans have been approved to create a new residential development consisting of 228 apartments on the site of a former tannery, just outside Leeds city centre and close to Scott Hall Road.

Designed by Leeds-based Brewster Bye Architects on behalf of Stage One Development and Partners, the scheme is located on a 1.25 hectare brownfield site accessed off Buslingthorpe Lane, which is known as Hill Top Works.

The site is currently occupied by a former mill building and the derelict tannery, which have mostly sat empty for more than 20 years.

A Leeds City Council plans panel approved plans for five modern buildings to be built on the site around its boundary wall and 115 foot high chimney, which will become focal points within the development.

The proposed one, two and three bedroom apartments will give a mix of scale and type of accommodation and a quarter of the site’s footprint will be amenity space with extensive landscaping through the creation of a 143 space underground car park.

Chris Austin, managing director at Brewster Bye Architects, said: “Securing planning for this development will breathe new life into a redundant site as well as providing a superb range of much needed new homes which will be targeted at first time buyers.

“The site occupies an elevated position and many of the homes will enjoy far reaching views across Leeds.

“The development will also boast plenty of high quality amenity space that will benefit from lots of natural light through the five buildings being stepped in height, along the natural contours of the site.

“It’s also great that the site’s historic boundary wall, landmark chimney and original cottages can be incorporated into the development.

“These will continue to point towards the site’s industrial heritage and act as a reminder that the Sheepscar area was once home to such a thriving leather industry.”
