NewcastleGateshead Chief visits China to promote 2018 Great Exhibition
Sarah Stewart, CEO of destination marketing and management organisation NewcastleGateshead Initiative, visited China this week to promote the 2018 Great Exhibition of the North.
The exhibition, which is anticipated to significantly boost tourism in the region, attracted over 270,000 people from China to the UK last year, generating £586m.
Newcastle-Gateshead fended off competition from three northern rivals to land the event, which will showcase the North’s cultural and artistic heritage from here on Tyneside.
Travelling with the official UK delegation to the UK-China High Level People to People Dialogue, Sarah, Sarah encouraged Chinese visitors to come to the region and get involved in the event,
Sarah said: “The Great Exhibition of the North is an unparalleled opportunity to transform perceptions of what the North has to offer global visitors and investors. I’m delighted to have been invited to be part of the official UK delegation to China.
“Cities across the whole of Northern England have strong and vibrant Chinese communities, from Manchester and Liverpool to Leeds and Newcastle, the Great Exhibition of the North, will provide a platform to make the most of an already strong cultural synergy to promote the North as open for investment, business and leisure tourism.”
Karen Bradley, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, said: “The Great Exhibition of the North will showcase the incredible creative, cultural and design sectors across the whole of the North of England.
“From attracting more Chinese tourists to increased region-to-region cultural exchange, we’ve heard great enthusiasm from the Chinese during this visit for more collaboration.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for the Great Exhibition of the North to encourage even more Chinese visitors to come and explore the fantastic range of cultural experiences the region has to offer.”
