£9.1m lottery funding to help Wilmslow firm bring Silverstone designs to life

The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded Silverstone Heritage Limited a £9.1m grant which will enable it to build a heritage project, designed by Wilmslow-based Mather & Co, at the home of British Motor Racing in Northamptonshire.

The Silverstone Heritage Experience will ensure that the heritage of Silverstone and British motor racing is explained and interpreted for today’s public as well as being protected for future generations.

It will bring to life Silverstone’s history, not only through the exhibition, but also a physical heritage trail around the wider site, supported by a mobile downloadable app.

Chris Mather, chief executive, Mather & Co, said: “This is a flagship project for Mather & Co and we’re thrilled to have been able to help to secure HLF funding for it so that we can bring the plans and designs to life for this and every generation that follows.

“As the lead consultant we will work hard to ensure that the heritage of Silverstone and British motor racing, and the relevant collections are given a rightful home in new state-of-the-art surroundings for everyone to enjoy.

“The story of Silverstone is broader than just Formula 1, the site has a rich and diverse history which has remained untold to the wider public until now and warrants further investigation and interpretation in a modern and dynamic visitor centre.”

Sally Reynolds, CEO of Silverstone Heritage Limited, said: “We were delighted to hear that our bid has been successful.

“This means that work on the project can start in the New Year and that the Silverstone Heritage Experience can open to the public in spring 2019.”
