Morrisons plotting 700-home scheme in north London

Supermarket chain Morrisons has joined forces with Barratt Homes to build 700 new homes in north London has part of redevelopment work at one of its stores in the capital.

New plans for its Chalk Farm store, which has been dubbed Camden Goods Yard, include seven residential blocks containing 700 new homes, which will include affordable units, office workspace, health and fitness facilities and green spaces.

Spread over eight acres, the designs for the site encompass towers ranging from seven to nine storeys with the possibility of further towers of between 10 and 17 storeys.

A spokesperson said: “The plans for the Camden Goods Yard development are at an early stage but would include a new Morrisons store with petrol station along with a range of new homes and affordable properties, offices, shops and extensive public spaces.”

If approved, Bradford-headquartered Morrisons would not be the first supermarket to dip its toe into the housing market after rivals Sainsbury’s and Tesco have embarked on similar projects in recent years after seeing their profits squeezed by budget retailers such as Aldi and Lidl.

One of the most notable, Sainsbury’s redevelopment of its Nine Elms store in Vauxhall, also with Barratt Homes, netted the grocer £95m in property fees, and led to the retailer earmarking ten further sites in London for possible redevelopment.
