Housebuilder's donation turns up the heat for hospice

A West Yorkshire hospice is one step closer to a new heating system, thanks to a donation from a local housebuilder.

Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire has awarded The Prince of Wales Hospice £1,000, as part of its Community Champions scheme.

The Hospice, which provides specialist palliative care to people with life-limiting illness, is in desperate need of a new heating system and is working hard to reach its £31,000 target.

Based in Pontefract, the Hospice opened in 1989 and has since being caring for adults in Castleford, Featherstone, Knottingley, Normanton, Hemsworth, South Elmsall and South Kirby. The new energy-efficient heating system will help reduce fuels bills and enable future expansion of the hospice.

Sharon Batty, the trust’s fundraising officer, said: “We were so pleased to receive Persimmon Homes’ donation. We support around 1,000 people every year and our existing 27-year-old heating system is simply costly to maintain and not as effective as it used to be.

“Our proposed new system will offer significant savings on fuel costs, repairs and maintenance, which to us as a charity is imperative. The upgraded system will give us more controllable heat and the set up will allow for future expansion of the hospice building, as the demand for bedrooms increases.”

The Persimmon Homes Community Champions initiative invites groups and charities who have already worked hard to raise money themselves to apply for match-funding of up to £1,000 by completing an online form at www.persimmonhomes.com/charity.

Since its launch in March last year, Persimmon Homes, as a group, has supported over 1,000 charities and group and donated nearly £1 million across the UK .

Simon Whalley, sales director at Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire, added: “We are currently building at two sites in Castleford and recently launched our Friarwood Park development in Pontefract, so we are delighted to support The Prince of Wales Hospice.

“The hospice provides such a valuable and supportive service in the areas we build and we hope this donation helps them reach their fundraising target a little sooner.”
