Top Christmas decorating tips for new buyers

With the festive season fast approaching, many people are beginning to think about how they can decorate their home. Jackie Summerfield, Managing Director of Show Business Interiors, has put together her top tips to help you get creative with your Christmas decorations this year.

Decide on your theme

Whether your taste is traditional or modern, pick a theme and make sure it flows throughout the house. You could add rustic pinecones with reds and golds or go for all whites with metallic accents – it’s up to you!

Get everyone to help

Get imaginative! Add a special touch by using jam jars with tea lights in windows to show Santa where to land. Make a day of it and deck the halls with cut out snowflake bunting to keep the kids busy when it’s cold and frosty outside. For that extra twinkle around the home add fairy lights - choose ones to match your theme – and add them to vases and fireplaces as well as your tree. Hang your Christmas cards around your home for an extra personal touch and pop cloves and oranges in beautiful bowls to add that beautiful festive smell to the home too!

A show-stopping fireplace

Your fireplace or mantelpiece offers the perfect platform to display festive decorations. Traditional or country, glittery or stylish, there is a theme suited to you, your family and your home. Light up your mantelpiece and turn it into a focal point by making it glow with Christmas scented candles and complete the look with traditional family stockings, ready for Santa to fill!

The Christmas tree

No Christmas tree is complete without homemade decorations. Every home has its own unique style, from the perfectly placed stylish bauble to the vibrant homemade ornaments. Add a personal touch and create special memories with decorations made by the little ones in your family. Winter walks are great for collecting pinecones - dip them in glue and sprinkle them with a touch of glitter for the perfect Christmassy finish. Other tips to dressing your tree include:

1) Measure your space to get the right size tree and check your fairy lights are working before you position them onto the tree!

2) Put the lights and tinsel on first - it’s possible to amp up the magical feel by putting two lots of Christmas lights on instead of just one!

3) Decorate with baubles to suit your your theme. If you prefer a cosy and traditional feel then go for deep reds and golds, or for a wintery feel go for decorations in blue, sliver and white. Place your decorations deep onto branches as well as to the front to add depth and richness to your tree.

4) Finish off your tree by adding a feature decoration on top. The most traditional tree toppers are either a star or an angel, but you can now find all manner of toppers, or go down the homemade route and create an original with the whole family.

The main priority when decorating your home is making sure you gather the whole family, have fun and remember there isn’t a right or wrong way to decorate! Even new homeowners with very little time can add festive touches to their home – it’s a chance to show off your personal style and make your house feel like a home.
