Leeds online pet supplier sees turnover surpass £6m after sniffing out larger premises

Monster Pet Supplies, the Leeds-based online pet supplies store, has reported a turnover of £6.3m, an increase of 47% from last year.

The company, which was launched in 2010 by Leeds-born founder and entrepreneur Jonny Gould, was one of the many businesses in Kirkstall that were hit by the damaging floods which took place nearly a year ago.

The Boxing Day storms resulted in significant damage to Monster Pet Supplies’ stock.

Following the floods and to support the future growth of the business, Monster Pet Supplies applied to the Business Growth Programme and was awarded a grant from the Leeds City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (The LEP).

The company used the grant to fund a move into new, larger premises, which also helped safeguard 28 jobs.

The new 18,500 sq ft premises includes a state-of-the-art warehouse for stock and distribution and enough office space for the company to expand.

Since its inception in 2010, Monster Pet Supplies has shipped over 4.3 million tonnes of pet food to nearly half a million customers nationwide.

In addition, back in 2014, Monster Pet Supplies struck a deal to partner with supermarket chain, Waitrose to launch Waitrose Pet, an online specialist pet store offering over 9,000 products.

As Monster Pet Supplies is responsible for the majority of elements of the white-label website - from the supplier relationships, stock, sales, fulfilment and aftercare - the partnership saw the creation of investment into the infrastructure of the business and new jobs.

Jonny Gould, founder and CEO of Monster Pet Supplies said: “Boxing Day last year was a testing time for the business. As a retailer, Christmas is the busiest time of the year and on top of Monster Pet Supplies’ national customer base, we also had the orders from WaitrosePet.com and other partners to fulfil.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the help received from staff, friends, volunteers - it may have been a very different story without them.

“Moving into new premises will help us to achieve our ambitious growth plans and it will also open the door to recruitment opportunities here in Leeds over the next 12 months.”
