Plans submitted for 2,000 home garden village in Ponteland

Property developers have submitted plans to Northumberland County Council for a 2,000-home garden village near Ponteland.

Lugano Property Group have developed proposals for Dissington Garden Village, a mixed use community that, if approved, will deliver affordable housing along with education, leisure, medical and retail amenities centred around Limestone Lane.

The proposals include 600 affordable homes, including a mix of starter homes and supported housing for the elderly, along with 130 hectares of public open space and landscaping.

Planned amenities, which will be managed by a community trust led by local residents, will boast a primary school, medical centres, cafes and shops, as well as sports pitches, allotments and parklands.

Richard Robson, Chairman of Lugano Property Group, said: “Dissington Garden Village is a unique opportunity for the region. We want to create an exceptional new community with a high quality design people will value.

“Our sole ownership of the estate, coupled with its highly desirable location, gives us the ability to do just that while providing infrastructure improvements, giving much more back to the local area than typical development projects.”

Plans also include a raft of infrastructure and environmental work to the Ponteland area, with a £90m package of improvements including a relief road that bypasses the centre of the town, funding for secondary education and a flood alleviation scheme.

Work on the site, which the developers hope to begin in early 2018, is expected to create 800 construction jobs with a further 2,000 new jobs centred around employment activities at the development.
