Poskitts produce 860 Tons of Parsnips for Asda

A family owned farming business based in the East Riding of Yorkshire, specialising in the growing of root vegetables, has grown more than 860 tons parsnips for national supermarket chain Asda – just in time for Christmas.

The parsnips, which are inspected for their length, girth and flavour on a regular basis by the farmers based at Poskitts, supply Asda stores throughout Yorkshire and this year has been the biggest year for the supplier since their first crop in 2001. In the final week before Christmas, 116 tons of parnsips grown by Poskitts will be distributed to Asda stores throughout the region.

Parsnips enjoy a long growing period and Poskitts ensure that they are sown before the end of April so they establish quickly and have a maximum growing period throughout the summer, ready for Christmas.

The company employs 300 people at their Yorkshire base, packing more than 3,000 tons of parsnips a year.

Lucy Grieve, Asda Produce Category Planner, said: “We have a long standing relationship with Poskitts and we are delighted that our customers in Yorkshire will be able to enjoy a locally sourced staple of the Christmas dinner this festive season.

“The quality of the parsnip Poskitts grow is of the highest standard and we are committed to supporting and championing local suppliers across the regions so our customers can enjoy local favourites stocked on the shelves of their nearest Asda store.”

Guy Poskitt, managing director at MH Poskitt Ltd, said: “One of the main reasons for the longevity of the company has been the high quality standards that our root vegetables are grown to.

“We are now coming in to the final weeks of our crop and the last of our parsnips are leaving the field and heading for Asda stores across Yorkshire, a supermarket we are proud to be a supplier of.”
