Walsh complete 'challenging' Camden primary school project
Structural and civil engineering firm, Walsh, have completed work on a new primary school in Camden that involved the complex integration of a Grade II-listed building.
Work on Hawley Primary School involved the construction of a new three-strey structure along with the conversion and integration of a listed building at 1 Hawley Road.
The single-form school, which accommodates 236 pupils from nursery to year six, is part of the first phase of the Hawley Wharf masterplan, a canalside development led by Stanley Sidings Ltd.
Commenting on the work, Walsh Associate, Niall McFadden said: “The layout of the school building meant that this wasn’t a straightforward project.
“Initially, a masonry structure with precast slabs was proposed but this was not suited to the design. We also investigated using a steel frame but a reinforced concrete frame was the clear winner.”
Further developments at the 580,000 sq ft Hawley Wharf mixed-use scheme include 195 residential units, restaurants, shops, a cinema and workspaces.
