Wizz Air takes off on inaugural flight to Bulgaria's capital from Doncaster Sheffield Airport
Wizz Air is set to take off on the inaugural flight from Doncaster Sheffield Airport to the Bulgarian capital.
The twice weekly flights to Sofia from Doncaster Sheffield Airport, which officially launch 23rd December, will operate all year round.
Steve Gill, chief executive of Doncaster Sheffield Airport said: “We are very pleased to welcome our first passengers heading off to Sofia with Wizz Air.
“Sofia is a beautiful capital city, steeped in history through its many Roman ruins dotted throughout the city and also a gateway to Bulgaria’s superb ski resorts.
“It is great to be boosting our winter ski, summer sun and city break offering with this new route.”
This new destination means that Wizz Air now serve 12 destinations from Doncaster Sheffield Airport.
Steve added: “This new route demonstrates the strength of our relationship with Wizz Air.”
Sofia will bring Wizz Air’s annual passenger numbers at Doncaster Sheffield Airport to over 600,000.
Owain Jones, chief corporate officer at Wizz Air, commented: “We are delighted to be bringing positive news to the South Yorkshire region just before Christmas.
“As the leading and largest low-cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe, our commitment to providing the UK with access to some of the underexplored yet rich in historical and cultural heritage parts of Europe is unwavering.
“The expansion of our network in South Yorkshire now allows an increased number of customers to visit the capital of Bulgaria on our low fares, paired with outstanding on-board experience, bringing further benefits to the local economies of both Doncaster Sheffield and Sofia. WIZZ now offers a total of twelve routes to six countries from Doncaster Sheffield Airport and we look forward to welcoming many passengers on board.”
