Port of Tyne anticipates record year

The Port of Tyne is expecting to achieve a record year this year, with more than 50 cruise calls already booked for 2017.

The Port celebrated an all-time high of 44 cruise ship visits in 2016, with more cruise lines than ever before discovering all that North East England has to offer.

Port chiefs say that the Port is taking advantage of demand existing for people wanting to begin their cruises locally, as it offers trips from the region to Scandinavia, the Baltics, Iceland and Europe as well as round-Britain stops on offer.

The Port of Tyne’s cruise and ferry business adds approximately £60m to the region’s economy per annum, supporting an estimated 1,700 tourism related jobs.

Destinations direct from the Port also include cruises to Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Spain and Portugal.

Port of Tyne is also expecting to handle around 19 transit cruises bringing tourists into the North East and over 30 turnarounds sailing away to destinations that include Andalusia, Barcelona, German waterways, St. Petersburg, the Baltics and around Britain and Ireland.

Nolan Gray, Port of Tyne Business Development Director, explained: “We make cruising direct from the Port of Tyne an easy, hassle-free and happy experience – so passengers can expect to enjoy their holiday from the moment they arrive at the International Passenger Terminal in North Shields.

“With more choice of destinations than ever before, people are saving time and money by choosing to cruise from the Tyne.

“And our passengers arriving in Port can explore North East England’s world-class visitor attractions all within an hour transit time from the terminal.”
