Pressure grows on Tottenham Hotspur to make Wembley decision as White Hart Lane farewell looms

The clock is ticking for Tottenham Hotspur to make a decision on whether the club will opt to play their home games at Wembley next season as work continues on their new stadium.

According to the Evening Standard, the club must inform the Premier League by the end of March where they plan to host their home games for the 2017-18 season, with only two months left for them to activate their option on home games at the national stadium.

The decision takes on added significance as, once activated, it will mean the club will be officially drawing the curtain on 118 years at its White Hart Lane home in North London.

Rumours have been swirling that, due to the club’s hesitance to commit to Wembley for next season, that they may opt to continue to host their home games at White Hart Lane next season albeit with capacity reduced to 32,000.

However, while the club’s £750m stadium is still on track for its 2018-19 opening, sources say the club are keeping all their options open considering the complexity of the project, and will not be drawn on concrete plans until an accurate transition timetable is put in place.

The club have also argued that the move to their new 61,000-seater stadium does not carry the same emotional weight as recent moves by Premier League rivals West Ham United and Arsenal, due to the fact that the new ground effectively sits on the same site as their current ground.

The Northumberland Park development remains on track, with the lower portions of the new ground already taking shape in recent months and beginning to cast shadows over White Hart Lane.
