North East furniture manufacturer wins multiple awards

A North East manufacturer, which has been making furniture in the region since 1947, has secured a raft of awards and nominations on both a local and national level.

Godfrey Syrett, which has manufacturing sites in Killingworth and Durham, walked away with two awards at the 19th annual North Tyneside Business Awards last month.

The firm was named ‘Business of the Year’ and also won the ‘Green Business and Sustainability’ award. The North Tyneside Business Awards celebrate the best of business within the area, and those businesses which have made a significant contribution to the borough.

Managed by the North Tyneside Business Forum, the event was held at the Village Hotel, Cobalt Business Park, and was attended by over 200 members.

David Hall, group sales and marketing director said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won not just one, but two awards at this prestigious event. There are so many excellent companies in North Tyneside doing fantastic work within the borough and the community; to be named Business of the Year is a real honour.

Winning these awards gives our team the recognition they deserve for all their hard work, and is a great endorsement of the work we do in the area.“

Mayor Norma Redfearn said: “Here in North Tyneside we value the huge contribution that all businesses make to the local economy. “Each individual business plays such an important role in our borough and I was absolutely delighted to be able to come along and learn more about them.

“I’d also like to say a big congratulations to Godfrey Syrett after it was chosen as North Tyneside Business of the Year. They do a fantastic job of showing the intuition and originality that makes North Tyneside what it is.”

The firm has also recently received a coveted national award for its commitment to sustainability in the workplace. The Furniture Makers’ Company named Godfrey Syrett as winner of its 2016 Sustainability Award.

Godfrey Syrett says it has made considerable investment in manufacturing technology in recent years, enabling the business to increase efficiencies. It has established its own customised fleet of delivery vehicles with a focus on meeting stringent European emissions standards, as well as introducing reusable and 100% recyclable packaging to support its goal of zero waste to landfill in 2016.

The firm was also shortlisted for ‘Product of the Year – Furniture’ for its flexible workstation solution, Zip, as well as ‘Manufacturer of the Year’ at the Mixology North Awards, which are organised and hosted each year by Mix Interiors magazine.
