Boiler Shop Lights up City

Building work on Newcastle’s most unique event space has finished and the Boiler House is once again lighting up the heart of the city.

The self-styled industrial, urban, chic event space is based in the old Stephenson Co locomotive works behind the Central Station.

The Boiler Shop was attracting up to 3,000 people to its regular food and music events, including the monthly Boiler Shop Steamer, Urban Night Feast and the Eat festivals. Those events were put on pause while developers Clouston Group carried out renovation works as part of its wider £200m Stephenson Quarter development.

Opus Building Services, which provides specialist electrical, heating and plumbing services across a range of sectors, won the contract to fit out the building.

The project included work to decommission and strip out existing services at the Grade II listed building before extensive specialist mechanical and electrical building services installations started. The project also included refurbishment works at 20 South Street and The Boiler Shop.

The new-look venue now has two main event spaces, the shop floor and mezzanine, as well as an outdoor area. A set of pods below a mezzanine floor provide toilets, kitchen, storage and bar facilities to support events.

It will host corporate events as well as a wide range of culture and arts and is also expected to welcome some of the city’s most prestigious gatherings, performances and exhibitions.

Gavin Richardson, Managing Director of Opus Building Services, said he was delighted the work was finished and events could start again: “The Boiler Shop is an amazing space and has really taken off because there’s nothing else like it.

“The Stephenson Quarter is an exciting and prestigious development in the heart of Newcastle and is transforming the area.”

The Stephenson Quarter incorporates contemporary architecture, restored listed buildings, three acres of new public realm, an exceptional contemporary art and culture programme, restaurants, bars and events spaces.
