Approval granted for £20m ‘Steel City’ student complex in Sheffield city centre
Plans have now been approved the build of a new ‘Steel City’ student accommodation development in Sheffield city centre.
Located on Hollis Croft adjacent to the University of Sheffield’s Engineering Faculty, the £20m will be developed by Southern Grove - a Mayfair-based real estate developer.
Sheffield City Council granted permission on Tuesday (January 24th) for the 246-bed scheme, which will also feature modern accommodation and networking facilities, including a rooftop bar.
Andrew Southern, chief executive of Southern Grove, said: “Securing planning permission for this scheme will enable us to create an exciting development that will break away from the traditional concept of student halls of residence.
“Sheffield-based Tan Khan advised us on the acquisition and we are working in close collaboration with local practice Axis Architecture, who were the masterminds behind this striking building.
“With Steel City, we’ve put together a high-quality redevelopment that stitches a modern twist back into the traditional 19th century fabric of the area.
“As well as enlivening and regenerating an underused site, Steel City will benefit Sheffield in a number of other ways, including job creation, increased economic activity, and the freeing up of traditional family housing stock for local people.”
Southern Grove will build, manage and operate Steel City under its ‘Future Generation’ brand.
Andrew added: “Being born and bred in Sheffield, I am thrilled to be delivering this exemplary project. Steel City is the first in Southern Grove’s ‘Future Generation’ portfolio and will set the aspirational tone that we will be going on to roll out nationwide.”
Work is scheduled to start on site at Steel City in the Spring, to deliver the completed building for the start of the 2019 academic year.
